Madrid is located at the geographical centre of the Iberian Peninsula, just one of the factors which led to it being the Spanish capital since 1562. Madrid may not boast the stunning architecture of some other Spanish cities, but it offers the kind of energy and excitement of a major financial and commercial centre. Although a loud and bustling city, Madrid does offer stunning greenery and wide open spaces. The Parque del Retiro comprises 125 hectares of parkland containing more than 15,000 trees and a host of cultural, leisure and sporting activities.
Shopping, Culture and Sport
If you happen to be staying in Madrid on a Sunday then a visit to The Rastro is not to be missed. This street market is located in the La Latina district of the city. It offers more than 1,000 vendors selling everything from clothes, kitchen equipment and craft items to toys and antique furnishings.
Fertility treatment allowing, Madrid offers the chance to enjoy some of the finest cultural attractions in the whole of Europe, including the famed ‘museum mile’. Amongst many other attractions, this is where you’ll find the world-renowned Museo del Prado.
Sports fans should take advantage of the chance to visit the Santiago Bernebau and Vicente Calderon stadia, home to Real and Atletico Madrid football clubs respectively. Both clubs offer tours throughout the year. And tours include the chance to explore the VIP boxes, trophy room, changing rooms and players’ tunnel.
Madrid Temperatures
Throughout July and August the temperature in Madrid hits an average of 25 degrees, and the long sunlit days tend to lead to lively evenings. In August, many of the native Madrilenos leave to enjoy their own holidays, resulting in a city which is less crowded and significantly quieter.
